Affectionately as the “Baby Rolls” introduced in 1922, the Twenty represented a major shift for Rolls-Royce, designed for private owners who wished to drive themselves rather than be chauffeured. Despite its smaller size, it retained all the hallmarks of the marque — mechanical refinement, silence and exceptional engineering integrity — powered by the smooth 3.1-litre overhead-valve six-cylinder engine.

As was customary for the period, Rolls-Royce supplied only the chassis and running gear, with the owner selecting a coachbuilder to complete the motor car. This example wears period Australian coachwork by the respected Melbourne firm Martin & King of High Street, Malvern — Rolls-Royce’s preferred Australian bodybuilder. Their bodies were renowned for their strength and dust-proofing, specifically suited to local conditions, and today represent an important part of Australia’s motoring heritage.

The body is of lightweight leatherette (Weymann-type) construction, typical of the early 1920s and highly desirable for its quietness and elegance. Unlike later metal-panelled restorations, this style reflects the fashionable construction techniques of the era and preserves the authentic character of pre-war coachbuilding.

The Rolls-Royce Twenty was produced between 1922 and 1929 in limited numbers, with every example unique. Today they offer one of the purest pre-war driving experiences — refined, remarkably smooth and surprisingly usable.
